When a new patient enters GateHouse Treatment for the first time, we work with them through every step of the process to help as guidance in their addiction recovery treatment. One of the most important tools at our drug addiction center is to teach relapse prevention and sobriety skills. These come in a variety of forms, but their objectives are to aid patients in the battle they will face with addiction for the rest of their lives. Hobbies are a great way to keep focused on this lifelong goal by giving alternative ways to cope with emotions, avoiding boredom, and staying away from old habits that previously led to drug and alcohol abuse. With that, we have a few suggestions for hobbies that anyone will enjoy.
Working out. Not only do many people work out as a way to cope with emotions and stress, it is one of the healthiest and most versatile alternatives out there. Joining a gym, taking classes, swimming, hiking, biking, or jogging are all great options. There is plenty to do, and there is an activity that will fit any one person’s needs.
Art classes. This allows for ultimate creativity, relaxation, and expression, and just like working out, there are plenty of classes or forms of art for any preference. Painting, pottery, sketching, photography, and more helping you find your niche and will be able to make some pieces of art you are proud to have in your home.
Family fun nights. Sometimes, our families are the best medicine we can receive. Working on mending relationships, having positive conversations, and working towards a better understanding of one another are all benefits of family nights. Whether you spend the evening playing games or watching a movie, time together can help heal and continue your road to addiction recovery.
Writing and reading. Escaping reality was once accomplished through addiction, and now can be accomplished in a novel or in our own writing. Expressing ourselves through writing means working through our internal struggles while reading allows us to indulge in a world that isn’t our own. As another form of art, creativity and relaxation can help us immensely in the addiction recovery process.
Recovery is not an easy path, but it is a path worth taking. GateHouse Treatment is here to help you cope with these struggles, work through them, and come out of each scenario stronger than before.
