Have You Heard of Fentanyl? 1

With heroin and other common opioids still being an increasing concern among the United States, the fear and abundance of information can quickly become overwhelming. As a go-to intensive outpatient treatment center program in NH, Recovering Life Services wants to be a guide for many as they learn more about the dangers and options available for those suffering from addiction. One of the latest drugs flooding your news reports is fentanyl, which has been adding to the rise in opioid overdoses and deaths.

Fentanyl has gained a lot of attention and notoriety since Prince’s death in April 2016. Since finding this opioid in his system, there have been more and more cases of overdoses and deaths that have been caused by this medication. Fentanyl is often used in medical settings for those who have chronic pain, or when more common pain medications no longer works. It has been known to be given to cancer patients as it often helps more than other opioids.

As 50x more potent than heroin, and 100x more potent than morphine, misusing this drug can quickly lead to life-threatening respiratory reactions. Fentanyl is known to slow the heart rate, slow breathing, cause dizziness, severe weakness, and more. These side effects can increase with the wrong dosage can quickly lead to overdose.

Though more expensive than heroin, fentanyl has also been known to be mixed in with heroin, and unknowingly taken by heroin users. Mixing fentanyl can be dangerous as it can have a mixture of reactions depending on the medicine or other substances that are taken along with it.

It’s important that if you or someone you love has found themselves suffering from addiction to heroin, fentanyl, or other substances alike, seek help immediately.
