In 2016, Massachusetts was among the states with highest rates of opioid-related overdose deaths. In 2016, there were a reported 1,821 opioid-related overdose deaths in the state. The opioid crisis is largely due to heroin and other illegal opiates found on the streets, such as fentanyl rather than opioid prescription pills.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse: Advancing Addiction Science, a report published on the greater Boston area in Massachusetts, called Drug Abuse Patterns and Trends in Greater Boston, “heroin and cocaine continued as the most dominant drugs of abuse in the Boston area in this reporting period, while prescription opioids/opiates other than heroin and benzodiazepines remained at moderate levels relative to other drugs.” Also noted in this study was the sharp increase in unintentional heroin overdoses. Hospital patient rates from 2010 to just three years later in 2013 – an astonishing 76 percent. As a result, there is an ever-increasing demand for Mass rehab Boston facilities.

In a more recent study published in February of 2018, also by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, “the most dramatic increase was seen in the number of overdose deaths attributed to synthetic opioids rising dramatically from 67 deaths in 2012 to 1,550 in 2016.”
