Treatment Versus Incarceration

Treatment Versus Incarceration 1

GateHouse Treatment provides a comprehensive, intensive outpatient program for many NH residents with the goal of helping our participants become product members of society through drug addiction treatment. We work with individuals from all walks of life and contribute to improving their lives and well-being. Our programs are designed on the individual level and can help prevent the chance of incarceration related to drug offenses.

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), nearly 50% of both state and federal prisoners were serving time for drug offenses in 2014 and 2015. In 2015, 3,789,800 people in the US above the age of 18 were on probation with 25% of those individuals facing a drug charge as their most serious offense. In the same year, 31% of the 870,500 people on parole had a drug charge as their most serious offense. 31.1% of those on parole and 31.6% probation had used illicit drugs within the previous month.

There is often debate surrounding the usefulness of incarceration versus drug treatment, and if the costs are matched with results. According to a study conducted at Washington State Institute for Public Policy, the cost savings provided by drug treatment greatly outweigh those in prison systems, $18 versus $.37 for every dollar spent related to crime. Many believe though incarceration might be an easy way to keep those suffering from addiction off the streets for some time, they often fall back into their old habits without access to proper and efficient drug addiction treatment center options.

With heroin treatment being so prevalent in our society today, it’s important that all individuals have access to reputable facilities.
